There are onlytwo magicians in England. In the early summer of 1813 Strange again performed a sort of magic thelike of which had not been done since the days of the Raven King: he moved ariver. They are copies of a set belonging to a sailor I met in Whitby. He informs me that he is constantly onguard lest your over-cautious pen, Mr Murray, should alter some of his ownpoems and render some of the more surprizing words a little more respectable.
Strange threw himself back into his chair, caught the damaged part of hisarm upon the edge of the table, swore again and covered his face with hishands. When the man and thedog rounded the corner, the girl and the man greeted each other smilinglyand the dog barked his pleasure. Lascelles smiled broadly. From 1808 until 1810 the editor was nominally Lord Portishead but there is little doubt thatboth Mr Norrell and Lascelles interfered a great deal.
